Retinitis pigmentosa is a progressive degeneration of the retina which affects night vision and peripheral vision. Retinitis pigmentosa commonly runs in families. The disorder can be caused by defects in a number of different genes which have recently been identified. Currently, very few treatments exist for persons with RP. Occasionally, the degeneration can be slowed to preserve vision for a longer time.
