Macular degeneration, often called AMD for age-related macular degeneration, refers to the alteration of the cells which make up a part of the retina, at the back of the eye: the macula. The macula plays an important role in the sharpness of vision; the degeneration of the macular cells will cause its failure to fulfill this role. The central vision becomes progressively blurred, while peripheral vision may remain clear, images are distorted, straight lines appear wavy. Initially affecting one eye, it tends to spread to both, and treatments exist to stabilize the disease.
